Luis Walter Alvarez was born in San Francisco California June 13th, 1911 to his father who was a doctor and his mother who was a missionary’s daughter and had trained as a grammar school teacher before getting married. He went to the University of Chicago for prep school and college. Luis received his B.Sc. from the University of Chicago in 1932, a M.Sc. in 1934, and his Ph.D. in 1936.

Early in his career He worked mostly in the fields of optics and cosmic rays. And he co-discovered the "East-West effect" in cosmic rays. Alvarez is a member of: National Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society, American Physical Society America Academy of Arts and Sciences, and National Academy of Engineering. He was named California scientist of the year in 1960.

In 1940 he built a radar system for the government. Also what he is known for most is making the Atom bomb. Even though it was a huge success and it won the war for the United States, He was still sad that all those people died. I think this shows allot of good character, because even though it was a huge accomplishment he was still worried about the people that got hurt.

Alvarez had a wife and two children names Walter and Jean. Walter and Luis came up with the theory that an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. When he was 77 he died on September 1, 1988.
